There are three rules of thumb often used when answering this question.

1. Measure Your Pet Lying Down.
2. Use the Weight of the Pet.
3. When in doubt get the larger, not the smaller size.

In general we believe that measuring your pet lying down as he is normally accustomed to lying, is the best way. 
 
Measure from nose or front legs, to back legs or rump; add 9" to 12."

Pick the size of the bed that will best fit those measurements, remembering that round bed measurements are in diameter (width across the circle).

While it is always best to measure your pet, we also provide the following guidelines for choosing the correct bed.

Use your best judgement if using the following table, note that different manufactures have different sizing criteria for small, large etc., use the size estimates on the left side of the table as well as your dog's weight on the right.  Remember that the breed examples are based on the average sized dog of that breed, if your dog is very large or very small for his or her breed you should adjust your size choice accordingly.  Again it is generally better to buy too big a bed than too small of one.

X Small about 20" x 12"	Chihuahuas, Maltese, Pomeranians, Cats and pets weighing 2 - 10 lbs
Small about 24" x 18"	Border Terriers, Fox Terriers, Pugs,  Shih Tzu and pets weighing 11 - 25 lbs
Medium about 30" x 20"	Cairn Terriers, Dachshunds, Shetland Sheepdogs and pets weighing 26 - 40 lbs.
Large about 36" x 24"	Beagles, Chinese Shar-Pei, Welsh Corgi and pets weighing 41 - 70 lbs.
X Large about 42" x 26"	Boxers, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles and pets weighing 71 - 90 lbs.
XX Large about 48" x 30"	Collies, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds and pets weighing 91 - 110 lbs.
XXX Large about 54" x 37"	Borzois, Great Danes, Mastiffs and pets weighing 111 - 125 lbs.
